Rosalind Franklin, born into an affluent British family in 1920, showed exceptional academic ability from an early age, especially in science, and earned her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Cambridge University in 1945. In 1947 she moved to Paris to study X-ray diffraction under Jacques Mering, focusing on the analysis of carbon structures, before returning to London in 1951 to work as a research associate in biophysics at King’s College London. There she conducted crucial research that contributed to the understanding of the structure of DNA. Although she never fully realized the impact of her work during her lifetime, Franklin’s expertise in X-ray diffraction, her studies of virus structures, and her role in revealing DNA’s structure made lasting contributions to science and paved the way for future discoveries.
