James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, was born on November 2, 1795, in Pineville, North Carolina. Raised on the Tennessee frontier, he overcame early health challenges to graduate first in his class from the University of North Carolina in 1818.
Polk studied law under Felix Grundy and served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, eventually becoming Speaker of the House—the only Speaker to later become President. He also served as Governor of Tennessee before winning the presidency in 1844 as the first “Dark Horse” candidate, narrowly defeating Henry Clay.
During his single term, Polk achieved major accomplishments: expanding U.S. territory by acquiring California, settling the Pacific Northwest boundary, and establishing an Independent Treasury system. Retiring at age 53, he passed away just three months later during a cholera epidemic.
